JustChat - Chat Rooms
A selection of free java based chat rooms, aimed at adults. These rooms are moderated, and talk of an explicit nature is not permitted... so the term "adult" should be taken as meaning "grown up".

Kiss Chat - Chat Rooms
Free java based irc chat. Initially you start in the lobby, but clicking the button on the left of the chat applet gives a list of other rooms. These rooms appear to be unmoderated, and chat falls somewhere between amusing and juvenile.
The site is somewhat cluttered with advertising, while the applet itself is quite small. Fortunately, you can float the applet free of the page, allowing you to resize the chat window, and freeing you from the clutter.

Lunatic Phringe - Chat Room
This is something quite different from most of the other chat rooms listed here. It's a telnet based room, with absolutely no rules what-so-ever.
They say it best in their own words... "Visit the chat room. All sorts of wierdo's hang out here. NO rules, No Censorship. Say what you like, we can not be offended. If you are sick of AOL and other GESTAPO like chat's, try ours!! It MAY be offensive or take a bit to get used to. If you are easily offended, do not click here, do not pass go, do not collect $200 . Omegle - Random One to One Chat Room
This is another unusual one. Omegle is a one to one random chat system. Basically, you enter a room, and find yourself with one other completely random person to chat with, and then take it from there.
Comments from people who've used this service suggest that while there is a certain troll element, enjoyable and interesting conversations can be had quite often.

Penguin Chat - Avatar Chat Room
Flash based 2D avatar chat. Basically, you're a penguin, standing around in some icy environment with other penguins, who you can chat with. It's amusing, for a while.
